An analytical flow cytometer (FC) is a scientific and diagnostic instrument that provides cell-by-cell data, on multiple parameters, at a rate of thousands of cells per second. FCs are used in basic research, drug discovery & development, and clinical diagnostics for gene & protein expression profiles in cell populations, cell-based assays, labeled bacteria, biomarker discovery, as well as other applications. The existing worldwide flow cytometry market is approximately $1B annually, and is growing at ~15% annually. Currently launching its first instrument to its first target market, life science researchers, Accuri’s future opportunities extend into in vitro diagnostics, high content/throughput Pharma, multiplexed assays, and beyond.
First Target Market: Life science researchers in university, government, biotech, and pharma labs appreciate the capabilities of flow cytometers—one of the most powerful cell analysis tools available with the power to provide high density, multiplexed, and statistically powerful data quickly—but very few laboratories have their own instruments because of the high cost and complexity of the available products. Data from a PhorTech market survey of 4,000 researchers using FC highlight the pent-up demand for a personal FC: 86% of FC users want a FC in their lab while only 24% have a FC in their lab. With existing instruments priced at > $100K and often requiring dedicated technicians to use and maintain, most researchers are forced to share instruments available in core facilities and endure 4-8 week lead times, inconvenient locations, usage fees, and the inability to do spontaneous experiments to follow-up on interesting results. Accuri’s paradigm-changing concept offers an extraordinary 2-laser, 6-detector product with performance similar to that of market leaders at a fraction of the price, creating an industry-changing value proposition that will break the boundaries that currently constrain the use of FC. Accuri’s proprietary technology (14 patent applications) dramatically reduces the cost of ownership, enables user self-installation, and includes a range of innovations that make the product easy to use, thereby making the product accessible to a wider range of users. With over six months of successful beta testing under its belt, Accuri is currently shipping instruments to its first customers and expects $3.5M in sales in 2008, with growth to $42M in sales in 2010. Accuri’s innovative product was readied for market in less than three years with less than $10M in invested capital. The Company has ~25 employees, an experienced management team, and a manufacturing facility in place. | |
