Company Overview: HeartSounds is a start-up, platform
medical device company specializing in computer-aided
auscultation, an emerging field in medical diagnostics.
Founded at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2007,
HeartSounds utilizes patented sound-separation tech-
nology to provide non-invasive devices that can more
accurately detect various cardiac dysfunctions and
abnormalities.

A Platform Technology: For centuries, listening to heart
sounds has provided physicians with important information
related to normal heart sounds and numerous pathologies.
Unfortunately, precise auscultation using manual methods,
such as a stethoscope, can be highly subjective and labor
intensive. HeartSounds’ PATCH™ (Passive Auscultation Tech-
nology to determine Cardiovascular Health) is a computer-
aided auscultation platform designed to utilize the importance
of sound to help improve the reliability and accuracy of
characterizing cardiovascular health. PATCH™ technology
utilizes a combination of hardware and software to separate
individual component sounds from composite sound mixtures.
This previously was impossible to do. The patented, digital,
automated PATCH™ platform consists of devices that can
isolate individual heart sounds, detect murmurs, determine
specific abnormalities and separate fetal heart sounds.
The PATCH™ platform can record, transmit, archive
and perform diagnostic analysis of the isolated sound data.

·The Immediate Need: An immediate opportunity for the
PATCH™ exists in the fetal monitoring space due to limit-
ations of current tech-nologies and an increasingly hostile
medical-legal environment. Broad demographic trends of
increasing obesity, advancing maternal age and increasing
multiple gestation pregnancies are exacerbating the
weaknesses of current techniques. Concurrently, mounting
legal pressures have forced obstetricians to rely on inaccurate
or ambiguous data to make definitive treatment decisions to
mitigate risk. There is an unmet medical need for an advanced,
objective, non-invasive measurement of fetal health.

·The Solution: Utilizing its patented technology, HeartSounds’
FetalPATCHä will meet the needs of patients, obstetricians, and
hospitals. Because of its adaptive, dynamic algorithm, the
FetalPATCHä allows mothers to relax and move freely as fetal
monitoring occurs, while at the same time offering an improved
analysis of the baby’s health. By providing the obstetrician with
a more consistent and objective measure of the fetal heart rate,
he/she can better assess the status of the fetus, and, thus, more
confidently recommend treatment. Hospitals can continue to
modernize their offerings while also enjoying the cost savings
associated with a reduced nurse-to-
patient ratio, shorter patient stay and decreased likelihood of
expensive litigation.
