At 5 pm, 40% of Americans have no idea what they will be having for dinner that evening.[1] Despite their increasingly busy schedules, women retain the primary responsibility for meal preparation and increasingly seek out convenient alternatives. This consumer dynamic has fueled the growth of the $100B “home meal replacement market.” For our target customer, the “working, commuting, chauffeuring mom in upper income households,” quality – especially freshness and wholesomeness – are usually compromised in these convenient solutions.
The Perfect Dinner (TPD) is a unique concept that addresses the need for both quality and convenience. It is fresh-made, family-favorite dinners that are fully prepared and ready to heat and eat in the comfort of home. A variety of dinners and side dishes are prepared fresh each day in TPD’s commercial kitchen, then packaged and refrigerated in three convenient family sizes. Dinners are ready for carry-out from the retail storefront or available for delivery without pre-ordering. TPD opened a test location in late 2003 and has proven the consumer appeal of this concept. TPD retains nearly 2000 annual customers (21% penetration of target family households in the area) who spend $41.24 per occasion an average of 6.6 times per year, yielding annual sales of over $520K and breakeven profitability. The Perfect Dinner has devised a unique “hub & spoke” operational model that separates food production from retail presence, allowing the concept to scale profitably to other communities. In this model, a central kitchen hub would be the production facility for six or more retail outlets serving distinct communities. Economies of scale will be achieved through improved labor cost for large-scale food preparation and reduced food cost through bulk purchasing and reduction of waste. TPD is seeking to prove the hub & spoke model by building out two new retail outlets, or “spokes,” in distinct communities, served by the existing/expanded kitchen (operating as a “pseudo hub.”)
Nationally The Perfect Dinner has a $760M revenue opportunity, which represents 0.8% share of the home meal replacement segment.
The Perfect Dinner was founded by Karen Gruber who has a 20+ year track record in marketing/advertising, and Jill Haas who has a 20+year track record in food development and consulting. Sue Klaus, a proven accounting/finance professional joined the team as CFO in late 2007. The team needs to add an experienced, multi-unit foodservice operator as TPD expands. TPD has developed over 250 proprietary recipes, has applied for national trademark (currently on secondary register) and has been valued at $2 M (using 30% discount rate). | |
